Archives and public traces of the web

Document an older page or infrastructure while retaining observation dates and limits.

Choose the right source

Separate original URL, capture date and the date asserted in the content. Check loaded resources in an archive: an image or script may be missing or from another time. For a domain or network, also fix the period of the observed registration or announcement.

Compare result types

Wayback retains captures; Gallica and the National Archives describe documents and collections; ICANN and RIPEstat expose registration or network data. An archived page, domain registrant and infrastructure operator are different objects.

Reading example

A page is absent from archives. Extend URL variants and periods, then record the searched coverage. No capture does not prove that the page never existed.

INT

ICANN Lookup

Query public domain, IP network and ASN registration data through RDAP.

Some data may be redacted; registration does not prove who operates a website.

INT

Wayback Machine

Compare dated web-page captures and retain a link to a viewable version.

Captures can be partial; their date and content do not validate the page’s claims.

FR

Gallica · BnF

Explore digitised BnF and partner collections to place historical claims in context.

A digitised document preserves a source, not the truth of every claim in it; check edition and provenance.

INT

RIPEstat

Examine public routing, IP prefix and autonomous system data in RIPEstat.

A network announcement is a dated technical relationship; it does not prove website ownership or content authorship.

Frequently asked questions

Does capture time establish publication time?

No. It dates a retained observation. Internal statements, metadata or other records may help qualify the timeline, with their own limitations.
